Today we started our day by talking about our weekends and doing our opening circle! This week we are working on being helpful and responsible in class. We did language arts and learned about the sound 'r'. In science we started our new unit-- seasons! We started by talking about the 4 different seasons and doing a picture sort activity. We had gym with Mr. Newton. In math we continued working on shapes and played a game called 'spin and cover'. We talked about Orange Shirt day and why every child matters. We ended the day with centers and closing circle.  Please note:  Mrs. Read is going to be away for a week but we have an amazing sub who will be coming to teach us while she is away. Parents, if you need to communicate anything with our sub please send a note or call the office. I will be checking my emails as often as I can but may not be able to share information the same day.  This morning we talked about our families for question of the day. We studied the sound 'm' and reviewed our other sounds! We continued with our interviews and we are almost done! We had makerspace and made a playground using circles, rectangles and squares with a challenge to use other shapes as well. In math we started to learn about attributes and how to sort and describe shapes. Then we did a shape hunt to find different shapes in our classroom. In art we practiced our snake breathing and drew a snake. We ended our day with centers and closing circle.  Open house is today from 5-7! Families are welcome to come tour the school and stop in to meet their child's teachers!  No school tomorrow (Friday the 23rd) for PD day. Have a great weekend! 
 This morning for our question of the day we shared our goals for the Terry Fox run! We had our Terry Fox run and did a great job! We also read another story about Terry Fox. In music we worked on beats. In gym we played a bean bag game. In math we continued working on 2D shapes and played shapes snakes and ladders. We talked about how to be a good friend when playing games and at recess. We had centers and ended our day with our first library class! Books are in each student's backpack and are due back on Wednesday!  Ask me:  - how many laps did you run for Terry? -how can you be a good friend when you play a game? -how do you play shapes snakes and ladders?

 This morning for question of the day we talked about what we did over the weekend. We reviewed our sounds from last week and practiced writing the letters on a white board. We continued with our interviews and asking each other questions. In makerspace we went to the library and used different loose parts to write our names and then worked together to leave the space better than we found it! In gym we played different tag games with foam balls. In math we did our number of the day and then started our 2D shapes unit! In ELA/Health we read a book about Terry Fox, talked about how you could describe Terry and drew a picture of us next to Terry Fox. We ended the day with centers and some of us worked 1-1 with Mrs. Read.  Reminders:  This week we are accepting donation for "Toonies for Terry", you can bring in your donation or donate online!  The question of the day was "what is your favourite type of pizza?" and we found out that the most popular pizza in our class is Hawaiian! We worked on the sound 'd' and word games with hegerty. Today we had our practice for maker space and created our dream classroom. In gym we played Gaga Ball and when we were out we played with different recess equipment. In health we played a game, read a story about sharing and then had a sharing circle to share stories. In math we worked on number of the day and practiced counting to 20. In art we drew a bee to go with our bee breathing to help us focus! We ended the day with centers and our closing circle. Mrs. Read forgot to hand back the folders at the end of the day, they will come home tomorrow :)  Ask me: How do you play Gaga Ball? What is a word that starts with the sound 'd'?  Our question of the day was "what is your favourite colour?" and we talked about when we would use "is" or "are" to answer the questions. (I.e my favourite colour IS blue vs. my favourite colours ARE blue and pink) We worked on the sound 't' and reviewed our other sounds from the week. We continued with interviewing our classmates and then did a pre-assessment where we wrote our names and drew a picture of a person. In music we moved to different music and played dance freeze. In gym we learned how to skip. In health we read a story about sharing and friendship and then we practiced sharing by playing with some toys and Mrs. Read would keep coming around to take toys away until there weren't enough for everyone at our table and we practiced how we could share and be good friends! The question of the day was "do you prefer cats or dogs" and we talked about what prefer means. In English we worked on the sound 'b' like ball and brainstormed words that start with the sound 'b' and words that have the sound 'b' in the middle or at the end. We worked on phonemic awareness and listening for sounds in a word. We had our first whole school fire drill and identified some "glows and grows" (things we did well and things we are going to keep practicing). We had a lesson to learn about visually impaired students to help us learn about a classmate in our partner class. In gym we played with scoops and hoola hoops. For health we continued learning how to be a good friend and worked on what we could say if we want to share or take turns. In math we practiced counting. We ended the day with centers, closing circle and an intro into the learning commons! Starting next week, our class will have library every Wednesday!  We are starting

 This morning our question of the day was "what are you most looking forward for the weekend?" and we also shared one word of how we were feeling in the morning. In health we continued our skits and worked on expected behaviour in the hallway. In art we painted in 4 different shapes and after gym we cut them out and glued them on a paper to practice painting, cutting and glueing skills. In gym we played the chimney game where we threw balls and objects into the 'chimneys'. We had recess and ended our day with centers.  Have a wonderful weekend, can't wait to see everyone on Monday!

 The question of the day was "what is your favourite animal?" We tried walking around the classroom to ask different students the question and practiced asking and answering the question in a complete sentence. We had our morning circle and then we watched a welcome back video and saw pictures from the first day of school. We continued with our skits for expected and unexpected behaviour and talked about lunch time expectations. We interviewed more of our classmates! After lunch we did calendar and gym. We watched a video from the CBE for International Literacy Day and the Chief Superintendent read us a story! For art we read a book called "Not a Box" and then did our own not a box art! Afterwards, we practiced active listening by sharing our not a box pictures with a group and listening when others shared. We ended the day with centers and practicing coming to work one-on-one with Mrs. Read where we counted!  Reminders: Please put an extra change of clothes in back

  Reminder: Tomorrow Grade 1 students wear orange! Today we continued to practice our morning routines. For question of the day we talked about our favourite things to eat for breakfast. In health we learned 3 types of mindful breathing (bear, belly, 5 finger breathing). We continued with interviewing our classmates! We started to fill in our class calendar. In gym we played team work games. In English we read "What if Everybody did that" and then we did skits to show expected and unexpected behaviour in the class and on the park. For art we drew bears for bear breathing. We practiced for a fire drill and ended our day with centers. Ask me:  -How did we use the hoola hoops in gym? -What do we do to stay safe during a fire drill? -What mindful breathing did you like best? Why do we use mindful breathing? Tomorrow Grade 1 students wear orange!

 Notes from Mrs. Read: Thursday is spirit day! The colour for grade 1 is orange. Students are encouraged to come dressed in orange on Thursday!  Students each received their grade 1 folders today! Please check these daily and return to the school. Inside the folder is a sheet to help us get to know your child. Please fill it out and return to school as soon as you are able Today we had a class meeting and reviewed our morning routines! We added question of the day to our routine and asked each other what we did over the weekend. Today we also learned how to breath using mindfulness and filling our bodies with a big breath. We did our first interview of our classmates! In the afternoon, we had gym where we played relay races and practiced different ways to move. We brainstormed ways that we can be kind to each other, kind to our space and kind to ourselves. In art we did our first guided drawing and drew Mat Man! We ended the day with centers, blog and helping to tidy our class! Ask me:

  Today was the first day of Grade 1! We got to meet Mrs. Read and then we coloured in a back to school picture. We played a get to know the teacher game where we guessed answers of questions about our teacher. Then, we played "true or false" to get to know each other better! We did a tour of the inside and outside of the school! For art we drew sketches of ourselves. We read a few books today! One book was The Sharing Circle and then we had our own sharing circle and talked about what was our favourite part of the day was. At the end of the day we did centers, filled out our blog and Mrs. Read read us "Our Class is a Family"!  Ask me:  What was your favourite part of the day? What did you learn about Mrs. Read?
